Linking Scientific Research to Public Policy
The network will promote linkages between Scientific Research and Public Policy through the organization of forums for greater engagement between regional scientists, regional policy makers as well as the international community. This will include an annual Sustainable Mekong Conference but also include periodic stakeholder meetings. The network will also produce a series of documents, in part developed on the basis of the research undertaken by network partners oriented towards the needs and skills bases of policy makers and influencers. The key publication will be an annual report, entitled “Sustainable Mekong”, which is envisaged as providing a regional synopsis of key development issues, and regional opportunities, limitations, and potential responses. It is suggested that each annual report will also focus particular attention on a specific theme each year.
For politicians, policy makers and senior managers both within and outside the region, the key media will be a “policy briefs” series, strategy papers, training workshops, and primers on decision tools. Where possible, these will be translated into Mekong languages. The “Policy Briefs” series will consist of short and concise (circa 4 pages) summaries of research results and policy recommendations in each of the key sectors.
