Around midnight on 10th April 2008, on the road to Phang-Nga province, 121 workers from Myanmar were smuggled into Thailand, hidden in the back of a container truck. This was not unusual – except that on this night, the truck's cooling system happened to break down, cutting off the air supply to passengers. By the time the truck stopped, it was too late – 54 Burmese migrants had died: 17 women and 37 men.

On the Crossroad of Hope is an 18-minute video made by Sumernet in English, Thai and Burmese, tracing the stories of men and women like these. Interviews with the families of survivors and workers who send monthly remittances home put a human face on the issue of 2 million Burmese workers in Thailand.

The video also features an interview with ASEAN Secretary-General Dr Surin Pitsuwan of Thailand on issue of cross-border migration. Sumernet has been involved in migration research and policy since 2007, and this video draws from research conducted by Sumernet partners.

"On the Crossroad of Hope" was screened in Thai on national television Channel 11 on December 8, 2008, with the intention of creating greater understanding in Thai society regarding the plight of Burmese migrant workers. The video represents an important joint advocacy initiative by Sumernet partners.

A DVD version is available for training purposes to non-profit organizations and related government agencies;
