Centre for Ecological Economics (CEE), Chulalongkorn University
Chulalongkorn University is the first institution of higher learning in Thailand; which has evolved largely in response to the changing needs and requirements of Thailand and its people. Chulalongkorn University has eighteen faculties and a number of schools, institutes and projects, which are engaging in teaching and other related activities. At the Faculty of Economics at Chulalongkorn University, the principal objective is to undertake activities that promote the economic and social development of the Kingdom of Thailand. The Faculty has established links with many organisations to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and the everyday world. It has also promoted intellectual endeavour, exchange programmes, training and inter-disciplinary studies that have strengthened the Faculty's overall capacity to produce professional Economists with various and practical approaches. The Centre for Ecological Economics (CEE) was established in the Faculty of Economics in 1995 to encourage academic research work both at the theoretical and empirical levels. The focus of the research is two-fold; methodological and policy relevance. An ecological economic modelling approach is under development; i.e. to analyse CO2 emissions under alternative energy tax regimes, and to create GIS-based land-use models. It is also the aim of the Centre to contribute to the on-going discussion on global environmental issues; such as, climate change, biodiversity conservation and the use of economic instruments.

Research Areas:
The Centre for Ecological Economics is developing extensive knowledge through research at the theoretical and empirical level. At present, the Centre is conducting research in the following areas:
- The economic valuation of mangroves and the role of local communities in the conservation of the resources, using Surat Thani province as a case study.
- The economic valuation of natural forests, with particular reference to the teak forest in Mae Yom National Park and the ecological costs of the Kaeng Sua Ten Water Resources Development Project.
- The impact of tourism on the environment, the economy and the social structure of the hill tribes of northern Thailand.
Current research projects include economic valuation of the genetic resources of the teak forest at Mae Yom National Park, Northern Thailand and a biophysical and socioeconomic study of Bandon Bay, Southern Thailand. Workshops and seminars are held in connection with the research projects. The Centre organises, in co-operation with the Institute of Tourism and Service Economics, University of Innsbruck, Austria, workshops in the area of environmental economics approach on tourism.
