Vatchararuthai Boontinand

Dr. Vachararutai (Jan) Boontinand is a Lecturer at the Institute of Human Rights and Peace Studies, Mahidol University. She teaches courses in Human Rights Theory, Practical Skills in Human Rights Protection, and Human Rights Standards and Mechanism. She has joined SUMERNET as a Human rights-based approach Advisor.

Prior to becoming an academic, Dr. Vachararutai worked in the field of women’s rights and in development sector for 15 years including with Global Alliance Against Traffic in Women where she coordinated an action research in the Mekong region, conducted training on migration and trafficking and advocated for the protection of trafficked victims. In 2002, she helped setting up ActionAid Thailand and served as the Country Program Coordinator from 2004-2008 when she oversaw projects on education, women’s rights, food security and disaster response. She has served on the Board of ActionAid Thailand since 2012.

Her current research focus is in the area of democratic citizenship education, critical theory and pedagogy although she continues to take interest in gender and women’s rights, development, migration and trafficking issues. She has been awarded the Newton Advanced Fellowship by the British Academy and the Thailand Research Fund and is working on a research project using philosophical inquiry to teach critical thinking and democratic citizenship in higher education in Thailand.  

Dr. Vachararutai has a PhD in Human Rights and Peace Studies from Mahidol University, and an MA in South-East Asian Studies from the University of Hull, UK.
