SUMERNET Phase 3: Seven research projects approved

Sustainable Mekong Research Network (SUMERNET) is a long-term research network that informs and influences policy development on sustainable development issues in the countries of the Mekong Region.  Phase 3 (2014-June 2017) will continue to work towards sustainable development of the Mekong Region by putting knowledge-based policy engagement at the heart of its activities.

In SUMERNET Phase 3, seven collaborating research projects have been awarded with funding support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) through SUMERNET and from The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through the Lower Mekong Public Policy Initiative (LMPPI) after a research competition call from about 40 research concept notes submitted.

These selected research projects fall under 3 research themes; Climate-compatible development, Regional economic integration, and Ecosystem services and local development. These research projects are being implemented by more than 20 national teams across the Mekong region and Southeast Asia. They are at early stage of implementation and will be completed by late 2016.

SUMERNET Phase 3

Sustainable Mekong Research Network (SUMERNET) is a long-term research network that informs and influences policy development on sustainable development issues in the countries of the Mekong Region.

Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) Asia Centre has been hosting the secretariat of SUMERNET, actively supports the network’s activities, drawing on both regional and global intellectual resources.

Mainly supported by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), SUMERNET is supporting the formation of long-term innovative partnerships among research institutions, knowledge users and policy makers at different levels and in different sectors through four programme components: (1) deliver credible research, (2) convene and contribute to regional assessments, (3) communicate and engage with the policy process for impact and visibility, and (4) ensure effective management, network sustainability and monitoring and evaluation.

The Lower Mekong Public Policy Initiative LMPPI is a USAID funded project, housed at the Fulbright Economics Teaching Program (FETP) in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and managed by the Vietnam Program at the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation, John F. Kennedy School of Government on behalf of the President and Fellows of Harvard College, a Massachusetts non-profit educational corporation. LMPPI and its partners work in interdisciplinary and multi-institute research teams to examine water-food-energy nexus challenges in the Mekong Region and formulate policy recommendations for sustainable economic development.
