Mekong Environmental Resilience Week to explore solutions for building a more climate-resilient Mekong Region

During 8-9 October 2024 in Bangkok, participants from government, research, civil society, and local communities will share knowledge, collaborate, and forge partnerships to create a more climate-resilient future for the Mekong Region.

The Mekong Region is facing growing environment and development challenges brought by climate change, including rising sea levels, biodiversity loss, and water insecurity.

To address these complex challenges, researchers, think tanks, policymakers, community and civil society representatives, media and donors from the region and beyond are gathering at the Mekong Environmental Resilience Week (MERW) 2024 during 8-9 October in Bangkok, Thailand.

Hosted by the Stockholm Environment Institute Asia Centre (SEI Asia) in collaboration with Chulalongkorn University’s Social Research Institute and supported by Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, MERW marks a significant step towards safeguarding the future of the Mekong Region.

During 8-9, various experts from government, civil society, research, and development will share knowledge, collaborate, and forge partnerships that can help create a more climate-resilient future for the region.

One of the key features of the event will be the Mekong Regional Water, Energy, and Climate Policy Forum, scheduled for October 8. The forum will provide an interactive platform for policymakers, researchers, and thought leaders to exchange strategies and best practices aimed at influencing policy through evidence-based research. This knowledge-sharing is crucial to building resilience in the Mekong subregion, as the area continues to face increasing pressures from external shocks and environmental degradation.

Another highlight is the Regional Roundtable on Solutions for Climate Resilience in Southeast Asia on October 9. This roundtable will bring together diverse stakeholders to explore practical approaches to enhancing resilience, including nature-based solutions, green energy, and climate finance. By focusing on solutions-oriented discussions, the event aims to drive action across academia, government, and civil society.

As the week unfolds, it is clear that collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and innovation are key to addressing the mounting challenges facing the Mekong Region. The partnerships forged and strategies developed during the Mekong Environmental Resilience Week will play a vital role in ensuring a resilient, sustainable future for the Mekong Region.
