Short film – SUMERNET’s Impact on Reducing Water Insecurity in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta

In 2024, our journey through the Mekong Delta in 2024, after one of its harshest dry seasons, highlights the transformative impact of research and partnerships. This film showcases how SUMERNET’s long-term efforts have driven actionable policy recommendations in one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable regions.

My Le By My Le - Dec 11, 2024

Climate change is transforming the Mekong Region, altering weather patterns and intensifying challenges. In the Mekong Delta of Vietnam, these changes are hitting hardest where it matters most: the fields and waters that provide food.

This short film highlights SUMERNET’s decade-long commitment to creating evidence-based, actionable policies to combat cliamte and water insecurity challenges with robust research and partnerships. SUMERNET’s efforts have reduced water insecurity, addressed climate change, enhanced equality, and improved livelihoods for local communities.

The filming took place during 29 July to 2 August 2024 across four provinces in the Mekong Delta spotlighting these innovative projects:

  • Cần Thơ: Engaging boundary partners at Cần Thơ University.
  • Bến Tre: Integrated Assessment of Domestic Water Accessibility for Vulnerable Communities in the Lower Mekong Basin (IODA-LMB)
  • Sóc Trăng: Co-creation of Knowledges as a Process to Respond to Water Injustices of Marginalized Communities in Mekong Region Water Politics (RR-CKRWI)
  • An Giang: Out-scaling Water Saving Innovations to Reduce Water Insecurity Conditions of Poor and Marginalised Communities in Vietnam’s Upper Mekong Delta (JA-Water Savings)
and Bringing More than Food to the Table: Precipitating Meaningful Change in Gender and Social Equity-Focused Participation in Transboundary Mekong Delta Wetlands Management (BRIMOFOT)

In Bến Tre, Ms. Nguyễn Ngọc Sen expresses the fear that pervades the Delta's communities: “Now is the rainy season so we can use water freely. When the dry season returns, when the water is salty, we save water and don't dare to waste it. We must save water. Because everything that lives must rely on water". She received a 3000L water tank from the IODA-LMB project, allowing her family to store enough rainwater this year.

It's okay to be hungry but not thirsty, not parched (Ms. Nguyễn Ngọc Sen, Bến Tre, Vietnam).

This film reflects the essence of SUMERNET 4 All’s initiatives across the Mekong Region, supporting over 200 network members through nearly 50 funded projects and activities.

We are very grateful to the local communities, government officials, researchers, and others in the Mekong Delta in Vietnam who gave us their time and patience towards the making of this film.

The film is around 15 minutes, in Vietnamese with English subtitles.

Producers are My Le, Variya Plungwatana, Rajesh Daniel; the filming and editing was undertaken by Mona Creative Co.
